Scoring for Woodwinds – Orchestration Workshop (Level 2)
Led by Prof. Mikhail Bogdanov, Tchaikovsky Conservatory
Overview
The "Scoring for Woodwinds" workshop focuses on developing your orchestration skills for the woodwind section. Unlike the string section, which features closely related timbres that blend easily, woodwind instruments have a wide range of tonal contrasts due to the distinct sound characteristics of each instrument. These tonal differences, especially in different registers, create unique challenges for the orchestrator. The woodwind section is less flexible compared to strings, which affects its expressiveness.
In this advanced workshop, you'll learn how to balance the unique strengths and limitations of each woodwind instrument while creating a rich orchestral texture. We’ll also cover orchestration with French Horns, an essential skill for enhancing your arrangements.
Under the expert guidance of Prof. Mikhail Bogdanov, a renowned professor at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, you will learn to orchestrate for a variety of woodwind instruments, with a focus on achieving balance and clarity in your compositions. You will explore how to create tonal contrasts and use the woodwind section effectively in more complex orchestrations, including working with woodwinds and horns together.
