Scoring for Brass Section & Small Orchestra – Orchestration Workshop (Level 3)
Led by Prof. Mikhail Bogdanov, Tchaikovsky Conservatory
Overview
The "Scoring for Brass Section & Small Orchestra" workshop focuses on developing your orchestration skills for brass instruments and small orchestra settings. In this course, you will learn to balance the powerful dynamics of the brass section, particularly focusing on trumpets, trombones, and horns. Brass instruments, while less mobile than woodwinds, have a distinct sonority and dynamic strength that can shape an orchestra's sound in unique ways.
In addition to mastering brass orchestration, this workshop explores orchestration for a small ensemble – specifically an orchestra of Beethoven’s size. Known as a "Small Orchestra" in Russia, it typically consists of three main sections: strings, woodwinds, and brass. Understanding the relationship between these sections and how to connect them effectively is a key challenge for orchestrators.
Under the guidance of Prof. Mikhail Bogdanov, a leading expert in orchestration, you will explore the technical aspects of orchestrating for brass instruments, as well as the nuances of combining the brass section with strings and woodwinds. This workshop is ideal for composers and orchestrators aiming to refine their skills in working with small orchestras and achieving a balanced, cohesive sound.
